Fall Sight Word Game

In my classroom, we call sight words popcorn words. Some of my students are beginning to read and recognize these words. It is SO exciting! I decided to create a little sight word game for them to use for fall.

You can find it in my TPT store HERE.

I will email a FREE copy to the first TWO people to leave me a comment with their email address : )
I hope you had a terrific Tuesday!

Owls, Spacemen and Justin Bieber

Four week is a charm! I can honestly say I LOVE my job! We are finally starting to get into the swing of things and it is wonderful!

This week we learned about letter O. We learned about owls and made these little owl snacks on Friday.
This is the plate we shared with the office staff. Aren't they cute?

We have also been focusing on rhyming words and nursery rhymes. Wednesday we have "Wacky Wednesday" and do a hands on science activity. The kids love it! This week we did a Humpty Dumpty egg drop activity. I asked (begged) a mom to hard boil a dozen eggs for the activity. I HATE the smell of eggs, gag gag gag!

We dropped a hard boiled egg on different surfaces and predicted if it would crack or not. It was really a great activity to talk about how to conduct an experiment. We talked about how we had to drop it from the same height each time and we conducted each drop twice to make sure we hadn't made an error. We also talked about making predictions and that it's okay if we weren't correct.

There was lots of squealing and clapping and screaming involved with this activity haha. I just created this little worksheet to go with the activity.

Friday we had our first mystery reader come. Every Friday I will invite a mystery reader to come and share a book with our class. The kids have no idea who our mystery reader will be until they walk in the door. It could be their parents, a cheerleader, a football player, our principal, a celebrity, anyone!  This week one of my student's grandmothers was our mystery reader. She is a retired teacher and literacy coach and was so excited to come and read to us.  She was WONDERFUL! My kids had convinced themselves that Justin Bieber was our mystery reader. I had to tell them that he wasn't allowed in our school due to dress code issues...

Heartbreaking, I know. Maybe next week...

I am putting together writing folders for each child to use during Daily 5 Work on Writing. One of the things in their folders is going to be their own personal writing words. During my guided reading group time on Friday I let the kids ask me how to spell anything. I wanted them to have a refence page for words they might spell often like sibling names or pet names, etc. Justin Bieber was also popular haha. And Michael Jackson? I can't wait to read some of their writing.

Do you use space men in your classroom? I LOVE THEM! I have each child decorate a popsicle stick to keep in their school box. The spaceman helps them to leave space in between their words. I think someone space man was also designed to look like Justin Bieber...

Have a wonderful weekend! : )

DoodlePro Love

I have just a quick idea to share with you today: )

I am already so sick of carrying around a dry erase board. I hate having to have the board, the marker and the eraser. But, I love being able to have a quick way to quickly show my kids how to form letters, or write names or spell popcorn words.

Meet my new favorite thing:

The Fisher-Price Doodle Pro.

Oh my goodness! I love this little thing. It is SO much easier than carrying around a dry erase board, pen and eraser. The pen is attached and just slide the yellow knob at the bottom to erase. I love to use it when I walk around the classroom or with my guided reading groups. It's great to use for modeling.
I bought it for $7 at the grocery store. I really want to have a few to use with my small groups. It is WAY less messy than dry erase boards and markers.

I hope you can use this idea in your classroom : )

I am so excited that tomorrow is Friday! My classroom was bonkers today with the rainy weather. TGIAF : ) Thank God It's ALMOST Friday!

Roy G. Biv Freebie and Donors Choose Project

I have taught two weeks of Kindergarten, I am pretty sure I can now do anything! : )

This week we really focused on COLORS. I loved the Roy G. Biv ideas I have been seeing all over Pinterest, but I became really frustrated because I couldn't find a template to go with it. So, I made one! You can download it FREE here.  Let me know if you use it : )

They turned out cute and really brightened up the hallway! On Wednesday we did the Rainbow Milk science experiment. I am really trying to incorporate weekly hands on science into my lessons. I used the resources from Deanna Jump's Colorful Cats Unit. I loved all of the activities in this unit and it all went perfectly with "Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes." Which by the way my kids are obsessed with Pete the Cat!

"Ohhhhhh Ahhhhhhhh"

I have also decided to take the plunge and created a grant with Donor's Choose. What a neat organization! I am dying to have two iPod touches to use in my classroom. My babies LOVE to use the computer! We often have tears when this center fills up. I really want some more technology to use in my classroom. I really hope that I will be able to raise the needed funds for these iPod touches. There are so many wonderful educational applications out now that my students would be able to learn from. If you are interested in donating to my project or would like to find out more information click HERE. If you donate before September 12th and enter the code INSPIRE your donation will be matched dollar for dollar!!! I am grateful for any donation.

This week I will begin meeting with my guided reading groups and we will start our full schedule. I am excited to be in our "real" routine. I am also ready for some cooler fall weather. This 100 degree heat at recess isn't much fun.

Have a wonderful week!

First Week of School

I survived my first week teaching Kindergarten! I am EXHAUSTED! Thank the Lord for this long weekend. I'm already sick! Apparently my obsessive hand sanitizing didn't help.

This week I mainly focused on rules and routines. Some of my sweet Kinders have no idea about how school works. One of my favorite questions was, "What is recess?" We have also been working on raising your hand AND waiting to be called on. Just because your hand is up doesn't mean that you have permission to talk : )

The first day of school we read The Kissing Hand and made these precious headbands from Jennifer at First Grade Blue Skies Kissing Hand Packet.

On Friday we read a few different versions of "The Gingerbread Man." When we went to have our gingerbread cookie snack; we found that the gingerbread men had run away! They lead us on a crazy adventure around the school. The kids LOVED it!
We were so excited to find those cookies back in our classroom!

We don't take naps during the day (Is this normal?) so, the kids are so tired by the end of the day. I have been putting on a movie for about the last 20 minutes of the afternoon and turning out the lights. I am OBSESSED with the Leap Frog movie series. The kids enjoy them and they are educational. It helps to have a little down time.I would highly recommend them. Amazon has a great selection!

I am really looking forward to this week being a little calmer. I wasn't expecting the pure craziness of the past week. Enjoy the long weekend. I will be resting up big time!
